Roots in the drain: the silver maple problem in Montreal
A Little Tree Will Grow Big In the 1960s, as part of the city's re-vegetation projects following decades of pure industrialization, the City of Montreal planted massive quantities of silver maples in front of private homes.
Project description
In the 1960s, as part of the city's re-vegetation projects following decades of pure industrialization, the City of Montreal planted massive quantities of silver maples in front of private homes.
What's the problem with silver maples on drains?
The City of Montreal's project was well-intentioned, but as these trees have become massive, they can create problems with pipes, drains and foundations.
The silver maple is an arboreal species with powerful, well-developed and invasive roots that can obstruct or destroy pipes and drains.
What's more, as this type of maple is very water-hungry, it can accentuate the effect of drought on clay soil (particularly the case in Montreal), causing damage to foundations.
Our team's intervention in Montreal
We intervened in this Montreal residence because the sanitary sewer was completely blocked by roots.

After an initial camera inspection to assess the situation, we tried our hand at uprooting and unclogging the sewer.
Unfortunately, these were tried without success.
We therefore had to replace the sewer and cut down the silver maple tree to avoid any future problems.
It's a pity, but the tree shouldn't have been planted there in the first place.
