Project description
Today, we're taking advantage of a project to excavate and build a new English courtyard on Sherbrooke Street in Montreal to replace a portion of the foundation wall that had been damaged over time. We'll finish the project by waterproofing the foundation, installing a French drain and backfilling the site.
We'll show you how it's done on video.
What is an English courtyard?
An English courtyard is a sunken outdoor space that surrounds part of the basement or first floor of a building, often surrounded by walls or embankments, and accessed by stairs. It brings natural light and ventilation to basement rooms while providing a private outdoor space.
Particularly popular in Montreal, where urban space is sometimes limited, this solution, influenced by European styles, brings many advantages, such as natural light into basement rooms, better backyard ventilation and easier access to outdoor spaces.
