Collapsing basement in Montreal
Project description
Very dangerous house!
We were called by an elderly person who thought there was something wrong in his basement. We moved an estimator on site and indeed!! The house was close to falling like a house of cards. A contractor had made load transfers in the past on the ground floor in order to make an open area in the living room. The only problem is that he had not had an engineer's plan made for this work!
The support beam that had been added to the basement was definitely not strong enough to take all that load. We urgently moved a man on site with temporary support beams to solidify everything while waiting for our intervention.
As soon as the premises were secured, we had our structural engineer come by to inspect the premises and make his recommendations.
Basement collapsing in Montreal
Luckily, we didn't have to demolish anything on the ground floor. Just break the concrete, pour a concrete footing and install a new HSS post 4’’X4’’X1/4’’. In a week it was all done.
It was still stressful to be in that basement before it solidified!
